The format of the RoPay QR code is defined in the QR code standard developed by the Romanian banking community, in line with the European Payments Council's European standard in this field.
In addition to the fact that recipients can use this code for RoPay payments at traders' points of sale (physical and online outlets) or for payments transferred between friends, the code can also be found on bills issued by utility providers.
The RoPay QR code needs to be scanned from the mobile banking application in order for the payer to view the details of the payment transaction for authorisation. In other words, the QR code is used to make it as easy as possible to access the data needed to make the payment directly from the bank account.
The RoPay QR code can be generated by the recipient in the bank's mobile banking application (using the Generate QR code or Request money/Request money option) or by the trader (for the instant payment method at the POS).
If the RoPay logo is displayed at the point of sale of a small trader (static RoPay QR code), the payer scans the QR code, fills in the amount and pays.
At an online shop, as well as at a physical shop where RoPay is implemented as a payment method, the payer selects RoPay in the payment section and executes the payment from their mobile banking page, where RoPay is implemented.
RoPay was developed by TRANSFOND and is offered to end consumers through the mobile banking applications of commercial banks in Romania.
